Awards & Achievements

Efforts by Deirdre Imus and The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® have helped usher in “Green Cleaning” Executive Orders from the governors of three states -- New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. 

 

 

 

2012 - 2009

  • In July 2010, Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) was chosen to receive an Excellence in Patient Care award by the Studer Group for its exemplary “cleanliness” ratings on a national patient survey. 

  • In January 2010, Gilda's Club Northen New Jersey announced the addition of Deirdre Imus to its Board of Directors.   

  • In November 2009, Westport Magazine named Deirdre Imus "Greenest Volunteer" in its 2009 "Light a Fire" awards campaign honoring givers and philanthropists.

  • In April, Ms. Imus was  honored with the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northeast Organic Farming Association.

  • Deirdre Imus received a Heart of Green "Guardian" Award from The Daily Green in May 2009.

  • In addition, Deirdre was named as one of Glamour magazine’s Eco Heroes for 2009.

2008 - 2005

  • On December 2008, The third volume in the New York Times bestselling Green This! series from Deirdre Imus debuted. In The Essential Green You!, Deirdre Imus shares tips on how to "green" the way you take care of yourself, whether with the food you eat or the clothes you wear, or the cosmetics, toiletries, and hair products you use every single day.
  • In November, Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) was awarded the 2008 Environmental Quality Award for Excellence by the New Jersey Business and Industry Association (NJBIA) for greening the Sarkis and Siran Gabrellian Women’s and Children’s Pavilion. The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® was instrumental in the "green building" achievement. Among other green features, the pavilion uses wheatboard rather than particleboard (which may contain formaldehyde), recycled jeans for insulation, and the Environmental Center's award-winning Greening The Cleaning® program.

  • In October 2008, The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® hosted the first "Fair and Balanced Forum on Vaccines " with experts on both sides of the vaccine safety issue. Nearly 300 parents, legislators, public health officials and physicians packed the auditorium at HUMC to hear the  discussion, and hundreds more participated online.

  • In May 2008, Deirdre Imus was named "Woman of the Year" by the USO, and named to the Board of Directors of Generation Rescue.
  • In April 2008, the second volume in the New York Times best-selling Green This! series by Deirdre Imus debuted, Growing Up Green, Baby and Child Care. Two weeks later, it became a New York Times Bestseller.
  • In March 2008, the U.S. Green Building Council-NJ Chapter bestowed its first Green Products Award on the Environmental Center's commercial line of Greening The Cleaning® products.
  • In January 2008, Quick & Simple magazine highlighted the Imus Ranch GTC (Greening The Cleaning®) Citrus Sage laundry detergent at its 2nd annual New Product Awards at the Hearst Tower in New York City. (See story link below.)

  • In the spring of 2007, Green This! Greening Your Cleaning, the first volume in a new Green This! book series by Deirdre Imus, became a New York Times Bestseller.
  • In May 2007, timed with World Asthma Day, The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® and the East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc./Boriken Neighborhood Health Center (EHCHS) announced a collaboration to create the first "Green" primary health care facility in New York City.

  • Deirdre Imus was awarded the Rachel Carson Award from the National Audubon Society for her contributions to conservation.
  • Pace University bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.

  • The National Autism Association named children’s environmental health advocate Deirdre Imus to its Board of Directors.

  • The Autism Education Foundation of the Morris-Union Jointure Commission in New Jersey named Deirdre Imus a “Champion for Autism.”

  • In January, Spectrum magazine named Deirdre Imus "Person of the Year "

  • In November 2006, with children’s environmental health advocate Deirdre Imus by his side, Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi signed an Executive Order mandating the use of “green” cleaning products, free of potentially harmful chemicals, in all county facilities. Nassau County is using the award-winning Greening The Cleaning® products at its Executive Building in Mineola, N.Y., where the signing took place. County Executive Suozzi marked the occasion with a county proclamation declaring November 29, 2006 “Deirdre Imus Day.”

  • In May 2006, children’s environmental health advocate Deirdre Imus was honored with the prestigious Lizette H. Sarnoff Award for Volunteer Service by the National Women’s Division of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Previous Sarnoff Award recipients include: Dana Reeve, Nancy Brinker, Mary Tyler Moore, Betty Ford and Elinor Guggenheimer.

  • In April 2006, the regional office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) for its recent contributions to environmental health with a Region 2 Quality Award.

  • The EPA award highlighted recent “Green Building” efforts, which include the Environmental Health Center’s award-winning Greening The Cleaning® program and the Center's role in creating HUMC's Sarkis & Siran Gabrellian Women's & Childrens Pavilion, which opened in December 2005 and exceeds the U.S. Green Building Council's guidelines for Leadership in Environmental Design (LEED).

  • The Green Guide gave HUMC's Sarkis & Siran Gabrellian Women's and Children's Pavilion a "Top Ten Green Hospital " ranking from the Green Guide Institute. The Environmental Health Center provided guidance for the design and construction of the Pavilion, making it one of the few environmentally-responsible “green” hospitals in the country.

  • In April 2006, Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell signed Executive Order 14, mandating the immediate use of "green cleaning" products in state facilities. Governor Rell recognized the legislation as a move to minimize risks to health and the environment.

  • In January 2006, with information from the Center and our award-winning Greening The Cleaning® program, New Jersey Governor Richard Codey signed Executive Order 76, requiring all state agencies and authorities to begin using environmentally-responsible cleaning products that are free of harmful chemicals.   • In September 2005, The Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation recognized Deirdre Imus with its 13th annual Excellence in Cancer Awareness Award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

  • In January, 2005, New York Governor George Pataki recognized Deirdre Imus at his State of the State address for her time and energy in raising awareness of the hazards of chemical cleaning products. The Governor issued an Executive Order the same day, requiring all state agencies and authorities to begin using non-toxic cleaning products that are free of harmful chemicals.

    2004 - 2001

  • In November 2004, Deirdre and Don Imus were presented with the Cancer Survivors Hall of Fame Humanitarian Award for the Cancer Research and Treatment Fund.

  • In October 2004, the work of Deirdre Imus was honored at the Girls’ Inc. of Greater Waterbury (CT) annual awards dinner. The Celebrate Girls Award was presented to Mrs. Imus, an alumnus of Girls Incorporated.

  • In March 2004, The Society of Surgical Oncology honored Deirdre and Don Imus with the James Ewing Layman’s Award “for their generous contributions and unselfish efforts in the crusade against cancer.”

  • Organic Style magazine named Deirdre Imus one of theTen Women of Substance and Style.” The winners were featured in the September/October issue, which honored them for “…doing what they love…making the world a better place - and reinventing the good life for us all.”

  • In April 2003, SKIP (Sick Kids Need Involved People) of New York presented Deirdre Imus with the Ruby Slipper Award for the work and energy she has devoted to children’s health and disease prevention. SKIP is an independent, non-profit organization providing service coordination to some of the most medically involved children in New York State.

  • In November 2001, The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® was recognized by the New Jersey Business and Industry Association (NJBIA) when it presented their environmental award for excellence to the Greening The Cleaning® program at Hackensack University Medical Center. The Environmental Quality Award is presented to organizations for outstanding work in preserving or enhancing the natural environment in New Jersey.

  • In addition, HUMC and The Environmental Health Center received the top honor in the Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence at the 13th annual conference of The Quality New Jersey Organization. Greening The Cleaning® also received The Philip M. Scanlan Environmental Award.
