September 2012 Vol. 8 , No. 3

As parents and teachers everywhere settle into the school routine, we give you a fresh perspective on staying green and healthy at college.  This issue’s Sustainability on Campus comes right from a student’s perspective, with real-life tips from one of our exceptional summer interns. With 50.4 million grade school kids heading back to class, we all need to ensure that younger children have a Healthier Route to School, which we explore with environmental health and safety expert Dr. Tim McCauley.

This issue we take a new look at environmental health issues behind autism with Holistic Nurse Maureen McDonnell.  As many of you know, this is a topic integral to our mission and a common thread in our educational outreach and research initiatives.  To that end, you’ll find updated top environmental health threats from our Medical Advisor, Dr. Lawrence Rosen, who is author of the new book Treatment Alternatives For Children

As you glean tips to protect the health of your family, be sure to share these articles with those around you. It’s the surest way to keep the momentum growing, one community at a time.

Wishing you health and wellness,

Deirdre Imus

Timothy McAuley, PhD weighs in about these and other impacts on children’s health. Read more

Sustainability On Campus

School is right around the corner and many of us are shuffling to prepare ourselves for the new year.  As we head back to campus, we are reminded that remaining eco-friendly in a conventional environment can be difficult – and also a bit pricey.  We all are familiar with the limitations of the typical college student budget; however, students around the country are making an effort to promote conservation on campus in small but significant steps. Science and Common Sense Provide Better Answers For Autism
No one has all the answers as to why so many children are developing autism in increasing numbers. Genetic predisposition plus environmental factors? The increase in the number of vaccines given to a child before the age of 5? Some even explain this by saying there is better diagnosis rather than a real increase. The problem is, as we wait for experts to unravel the entire mystery, more and more children are being negatively impacted by this condition. Read more
